How 2013 Government Shutdown Affects Tourism

TravelingWarrior.com is here to let you know about how the current government shutdown will effect travelers.

https://www.facebook.com/TravelingWarrior

There are many things that are effected.

Flights will continue, TSA will still be doing security at the airport and air traffic controllers will still be in their towers.

Amtrak will still run even though they take govt subsidies.

Travelers in Washington DC are affected in that, the National Mall is now blocked off with barricades. We would like to tip our hats to the WWII Veterans from Mississippi that refused to let the barricades get in their way of seeing the WWII Memorial on the National Mall. They removed the barricades and entered the memorial. CNN has reported there are a dozen other veteran groups trips scheduled over the next week, so it is hard to say what will happen there.

The Smithsonian Institute is completely closed, so is Ford’s Theatre, the Peterson Home, Lincoln Memorial, the National Zoo (including the Panda Cam), the Holocaust Museum, National Portrait Gallery, and the list just goes on.

There are some museums in Washington DC still open though such as the Crime & Punishment Museum, National Geographic Museum, the Spy Museum, Corcoran Gallery of Art among others.

In New York City, the Statue of Liberty is closed. On the news you can see travelers from Australia and all over the world who came to our country to see the Statue of Liberty only to be turned away due to the shutdown. Also, Ellis Island is closed to the public.

In San Francisco, Alcatraz Island is now closed.

In Philadelphia, Independence Hall is closed.

In St. Louis, the Gateway Arch is closed.

In Puerto Rico, the San Felipe del Morro fort and El Yunque National Forest is closed.

All National Parks are closed. Several weddings that were set to take place in these parks were forced to be canceled. Any campers in the parks were given 48 hour notice to make other plans and leave the parks.

The shutdown even effects overseas, for example the Normandy American Cemetery and 23 other cemeteries for troops that are run by the American Battle Monuments Commission are all now closed.

The list just goes on and on.

We could give you a full list, but we won’t specifically to bring attention to the fact all government websites that deal with these sorts of things are not working and are down due to the fact of the shutdown.

TravelingWarrior.com will not take sides in politics by saying one side is right or wrong, but we urge Congress & the President to act and get the government back and running again for the sake of tourism and promoting America to the world. This shutdown is hurting the American economy, costing 12.5 million dollar per hour…LITERALLY, and is hurting tourism in this country. Our thoughts are with the Federal Govt employees that are currently furloughed with no pay, as well as the restaurant staff, tourism staff, cafeteria staff and others that being the government is not open is effected by this trying time.

Carnival Cruise Lines Cut Cruises in Europe, Baltimore, Norfolk in 2014

Carnival Cruise Lines has recently announced some changes that will take place in 2014.

Currently they have the Carnival Legend which sails a Northern European Cruise, and the Carnival Sunshine which is in the Mediterranean. Carnival will be pulling those ships out of Europe and will not have ships in that continent during 2014. They are hoping to get ships back into the region for the 2015 season but have stated that a decision will not be made right away. With rising costs of plane tickets, it is hard for US citizens to fly to Europe to make the cruises which is leaving some of their ships not filled to capacity.

Also, recently announced, Carnival will cut services out of Baltimore, Maryland and Norfolk, Virginia starting November 2014. For years, the Carnival Pride has sailed out of Baltimore harbor out to Bermuda and up and down the East Coast. They will be moving the ship south and its home port will become Tampa after November 2014. The company hopes to return service to the Baltimore and Norfolk areas but time will tell if that is possible.
